Why did we always get told to stand up straight? It was really irritating as a kid wasn’t it? So why were we told to do it? Is it really worth the effort?
The answer is YES. It really is good for you! The sad but amazing fact is that as toddlers most of us had perfect poster … we’ve just spent the rest of our lives unlearning it!
Some of the benefits are of good posture are:
-Keeps bones and joints in the correct alignment so that muscles are being used properly. -Helps decrease the abnormal wearing of joint surfaces. -Decreases the stress on the ligaments holding the joints of the spine together. -Prevents the spine from becoming fixed in abnormal positions. -Prevents fatigue because muscles are being used more efficiently, allowing the body to use less energy. -Prevents backache and muscular pain. -Contributes to a good appearance.*
Has that made you sit up straighter? The top and bottom of it is that our bodies work best when they are fuelled correctly and held correctly. Any poor care leads to physiological stress and ultimately dysfunction.
Some of the worst postural time is when we’re sitting, we slouch, curl and twist ourselves into the worst positions for our bodies, and then stay there for hours potentially.
Although we can get away with it as kids and young adults, we then pay the price for it as we continue to - a’hem - mature! Arthritis, muscular dysfunction/aches and pains, and chronic pain are completely normal side effects of poor posture.
Often the point when we seek help is when we already have a problem and then we look to physiotherapists or doctors, but don’t wait for this to happen. Look out a trained professional and see if you can have a quick postural assessment. The benefits are immense and there are loads of simple exercises you can do to re-balance your body.
So think about how you stand, and how you sit. Practice good posture, and that means actually live it, seek help if you need guidance, don’t just think about it - The results will help you protect your own body from unnecessary injury and it even helps your digestion!
